Restoration Company

'Bach and the French'

Bach & De Mondonville

The Bach Ensemble of the Royal Conservatoire
directed by Sébastien Marq

Bach was the main protagonist in the development of protestant church music. At the same time in France, the so-called “grands motets” were developed in the Catholic Church during the reign of Louis XIV. This is impressive music, which is not often heard on Dutch podia. On each occasion one of Bach’s cantatas from his Weimar period will be programmed alongside a Grand Motet.

In this concert you will hear from Jean-Joseph Casanea De Mondonville the grand motet "In exita Isräel" (psalm 123) and from J.S Bach the cantata "Wachet, Betet", BWV 70.

Guest concert: Mariavespers by Monteverdi

Barokorkest en Koor Koninklijk Conservatorium o.l.v. Chales Toet

directed by Charles Toet

The Maria Vespers by Claudio Monteverdi mark one of the most important moments in the revival of early music in The Netherlands. In 1972 Nikolaus Harnoncourt was brought to The Hague by the then director Jan van Vlijmen to lead a school-wide Monteverdi project of two weeks duration. At the time almost everyone was sceptical about the use of historical instruments, but with this project Van Vlijmen gave the starting signal for a new department of Early Music. It was in this period that Van Vlijmen gave Charles Toet, then a student in modern trombone with a great deal of time for the contemporary repertoire, the task of finding suitable instruments.
